Monitoring an application with logging agents

An effective way to determine and diagnose problems in applications is to log application events and errors. These events and errors are typically logged through a logging facility (for example JSR-047 or Java Logging APIs). Alternatively, errors and events may be logged directly to a Logging Agent as XML fragments. Logging Agents are managed by the Agent Controller permitting developers and support personnel to attach to local or remote Logging Agents to monitor the activity of the application in real-time.

Events and errors logged to a Logging Agent are XML fragments such as the Common Base Event.

To log application events and errors to a Logging Agent, developers may configure their existing logging facility and convert it automatically to the Common Base Event format using the Logging Utility Support. As an example consider the Apache Common Logging Sample.

Alternatively, developers may write XML fragments directly to the org.eclipse.hyades.logging.core.LoggingAgent class.
